Featuring the voices of Noah Jupe, Mandy Patinkin, Natasia Demetriou, Benedict Wong, Miranda Richardson, and Aasif Mandvi, the movie is based on Kate DiCamillo’s 2009 novel of the same name.

Also, the movie, which was produced by Animal Logic and released on March 17, 2023, was distributed by Netflix. Critics gave the movie a variety of ratings. The Magicians Elephant is based on a book written by two-time Newbery Award winner Kate DiCamillo, whose works, however, were admirably summarized by author Ann Patchett as tales that “do not shy away from despair or joy or strangeness”

The fundamentals we find in other children’s novels for children—young people who must solve difficulties on their own, a connection with an animal, the value of hope, and a sometimes-unexpected sense of community—appear in both DiCamillo’s fantasy and more realistic books.

But she enhances those components with complexity and compassion. Although her stories have happy endings, they are not always as straightforward as we might expect.

Is the Magicians Elephant Worth Watching?

The Magicians Elephant is not part of a series or a Pixar-like brand, which is a shame because it has smart, complex, and expertly produced storytelling.

It may not be as visually captivating and dynamic as some of its colleagues (such as The Sea Beast), but that is easily overlooked.

Even though some of the situations are absurd, the film never descends into pure silliness and instead keeps a lighthearted tone while addressing more somber, subtly asserted themes of loss, longing, and the psychological effects of war.

Because of this, the plot has some weight and strikes a deft balance between comedy and drama.

Character development, rather than plot devices, is what gives supporting characters like the Countess, the Magician, and Matienne their modest emotional arcs.

Without being inaccessible to younger viewers, its storybook symbolism and benign but significant subject matter invite reflective conversations about some of life’s harder truths.

More generally, it conveys a well-calibrated message of optimism over pessimism, and in the background is a subliminal recommendation of exercising patience rather than becoming reactionary and preserving reason even in situations of considerable emotional intensity.

With the ridiculous King, the infrequent cute elephant antics, and a few repeating gags, you get around 100 minutes of enjoyable family entertainment, a fanciful escape with some substance.
